3 Jewelry Store Scams to Avoid in Key West!

In 1985 Mel Fisher finally found the main pile of the sunken Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha. Since then, Key West has been known for some of the most unique treasure jewelry in the world. However, like all good things, some people try to come in and take advantage of this literal “gold rush” (well, more like a silver rush.) So we have created this blog post for you so you can avoid the scams when you are here!

#1: “80% off genuine Atocha Coins!”

We can assure you no one is selling GENUINE Atocha for 80% off. These coins spent 363 years under the ocean and are rich with history, they don’t belong on the same shelf as sterling silver.

#2: “Atocha replica coins made from silver bars found on the Atocha”

Again that’s a big NO WAY. No one in their right minds would destroy an artifact (silver bar) to create replica coins. There are plenty of replica coins being sold around town, and if you can’t afford the real thing, they are a great alternative! Just be sure you know when you are purchasing the real thing vs a fake.

#3: “Genuine” Atocha Coins marked up to $20,000, then “discounted” to a few thousand.

Atocha coins are very cool and as we mentioned, rich in history. However, the average coin is not worth $20,000. (The “money chain” is valued at about $100,000 and hangs below your waist, but that’s not what we are talking about here!) You can expect to pay around $300-$500 for a good coin. If you want it in a ring or necklace you can expect to pay more from there.
